Parent/Caregiver Support Group

A weekly process and psychoeducation group for parents and caregivers of  emotionally explosive young people.

THE DETAILS:

When: Group will meet every Thursday morning from 9:30am - 10:30am for 6 weeks beginning on September 15, 2022.

Where:  Koebel Library, Meeting Space C, 5955 S Holly St, Centennial, CO 80121

Who:  This group is perfect for parents and caregivers of elementary children who have frequent and/or challenging emotional outbursts.  Someone who wants to both learn new skills and feel the support of a group setting would benefit from this therapeutic experience.

Why: Over the last 14 years as both an educator and as a therapist, I have sat with parents as they confess feeling helpless, frustrated, overwhelmed and at their wits end because of their child's behavior.  The power struggle is real and I know that feeling of shame when I suddenly realize I'm acting like a 4 year old instead of the adult.  I've learned how stay calm in the face of monstrous outbursts because I understand that every behavior has a purpose and 9.5 times out of 10, that isn't spite or about me.

I run this group for 2 reasons.  First, I enjoy teaching parents simple, effective tools that can help reduce outbursts while reinforcing empathy and parent/child attunement.  I love hearing, "I couldn't believe it, but it worked!"  Second, sharing about the complicated feelings associated with parenting an explosive child is an important part of reducing the feelings of isolation and shame.   I believe in the power of the group to provide a space to be vulnerable, takes risks and gain support.

Cost: The cost of the group is $45 per week or you have the option to pay for all 6 sessions up front for $240, saving you $5 per group.
